Planetarium talks: from 1 June to 19 July every planetarium show will include a ‘night sky’ talk about the Matariki cluster: pointing out where you can find it in the sky and telling the traditional Maori story about this cluster, and why it signifies the Maori New Year.

Tuesday Talk: Celestial navigation: Join Carter Observatory and SMART Trust and discover how to find your way the celestial way!

Matariki Jazz suite: Renowned Wellington Jazz musician Lex French has written a very special jazz suite just for Matariki at Carter Observatory. Join us for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and be swept away with the music as you watch the stars glide by overhead in the planetarium.

Wednesday 17 June, two sessions available: 7:00 – 8:00pm and 8:30 – 9:30pm. $25 per person.

Pre-dawn Matariki viewing: Join the Carter team and friends to celebrate the rise of Matariki. Hear stories and waiata from our local iwi and watch this beautiful cluster rise through our portable Dobby telescopes.

27th June at Mount Victoria lookout, Wellington. 5:00 – 8:00am. FREE event

Whanau day at Space Place: Join us to celebrate the launch of Space Place, with heaps of family fun. Make traditional crafts and weavings, get your face painted, watch a puppet show or listen to a storyteller. After dark, the telescopes open, musicians play and science students show just how much fun you can have with everyday ingredients.

5 July, 4 sessions from 9:00 – 11:00am, 12:00noon – 2:00pm, 3:00 – 5:00pm and 7:00 – 9:00pm.

This is a free event but numbers for each session are limited. More details about getting tickets will be posted soon!

Chamber Music New Zealand Matariki performance: Be whisked away from Wellington and shrouded in the stars of Matariki with Chamber Music New Zealand through music, song, imagery, stories and taonga pūoro. A fantastic night for all ages.

8 July, two shows at 6:00 – 7:00pm and 7:30 – 8:30pm. $10 per person, no concessions. Must pay at time of booking at Carter.
