Outside of school, one of my interests is powerlifting, helping me keep fit. During the school holidays I competed in the New Zealand Powerlifting Championships held in Auckland. I managed to finish first in my weight category and added a gold medal to a few I already have. My daughter was pleased as she’s added it to her jewellery-box as her newest piece of bling. This way I know it will get more use than sitting in a box in the garage.
Within powerlifting, I also set up and coach the Kapiti Powerlifting Club, who train out of 318 Fitness in Paraparaumu. I’m an international referee, having officiated around the world. I’ve represented both New Zealand and Great Britain. The greatest satisfaction in powerlifting I get though is helping others achieve their goals in the sport. I transfer my skills from teaching to help motivate and more importantly, plan training cycles for the team and coach during training sessions. Nobody gets to achieve however, without hard work, thorough planning and understanding of how to achieve their goals. Members of the Kapiti Powerlifting Club had a successful championships, altogether we earned three golds, two silvers and a bronze from a team of nine – an excellent return on a lot of hard work!
